The change of view from allegedly passive material to »active matter« that engenders symbolic processes according to its inherent structure provokes a shift in the traditional boundaries between nature and culture. Thus, other traditional opposites (body-mind, active-passive, material-symbolic) can also be rethought as changeable polarities. In the project »Symbolic Material« we investigate the material foundations of symbolic processes in interaction with the symbolic dimension of materials from the viewpoint of philosophy, history of mathematics, physics, and neuroscience.
Conceptual work
The fundamental concepts of the Cluster – matter, activity, symbol, code, among others – present themselves as tasks and promises at the same time. Used and understood differently in the individual disciplines, they are experimentally explored and reflectively developed as common categories. One of the inquiries that stands at the center of »Symbolic Material« concerns the various interactions between materiality and processes of symbolization and conceptualization, as they come into expression in different disciplines: philosophy, mathematics, cultural theory, and the history of the sciences.
While philosophy offers methods of dealing with concept formation and analysis of terms that other disciplines cannot provide, conceptual work is not the work of philosophically trained specialists alone and certainly not merely a theoretical matter. Conceptualizations arise from practices, but they also help to clarify them. In this view, the historical and systematic reconstruction of terms and notions are no unworldly undertakings: understood not only as a means of presenting scientific results, but above all as instruments of research, they are to be judged according to which practical consequences follow from their use. This includes an understanding of their translatability, their equivalencies, ambiguities or inner contradictions as well as an awareness of their connotations, metaphorical charges, immigration and transfer of knowledge from various disciplines. The challenge is to provide conceptual orientations that comply with the Cluster’s interdisciplinary venture and consistently prove themselves in experimental practice and its material foundations.
History of Mathematics of Braids
One of the disciplines, in which one would not accept to find any of these metaphorical charges or traces of material practices, is mathematics. Mathematics, one might say, presents a wonderful kind of knowledge: it is a priori, in the sense that its truths are arrived at by reflection alone, without any sensual perception; it concerns necessary truths; and its concepts are considered to be abstract. While the above conception points towards a (problematic) presupposition that mathematics is immaterial, what is even more problematic is a possible consequence of this presupposition: the ignorance and marginalization of the role of material practices in mathematics – for example, the usage of instruments, the different notational systems or the various manual and tactile activates, from them mathematical knowledge was prompted.
The project »History of Mathematics of Braids« aims to propose a complementary, and in a certain sense opposing, claim: processes of mathematical notation and symbolization, as well as of mathematical reasoning, arise from material practices in an essential way. The project aims to examine not only how geometry of material practices is essential to conceptualize them (see also the project Weaving ), hence prompts and affords the emergence of symbolization processes; but also how the different spatial material practices – folding, knotting, braiding, crumpling, weaving, turning inside out, ridging… – prompt different and unique symbolic processes. The project starts from an investigation on the history of mathematical braids, practices and history of weaving and looms from the 17th till the 21st century and aims to inquire the how materiality of practices, diagrams and notations prompts and influences the emergence of mathematical knowledge.
Visual and Material Practice of Astral Science
The significance of visual and material practices and their influence on mathematical and astronomical knowledge is analyzed also in the framework of the history of science and knowledge. In the Renaissance life was regulated by the heavens: The stars determined favorable times for bloodletting and when to administer medicine, or even when to cut ones hair or bath. Potentates with a strong astral belief, organized their social, political, and cultural routines according to the heavens. Astronomical tables, like the Parisian Alfonsine Tables, allowed to calculate the solar position, times of eclipses, and the positions and relations of the planets. Such tables were the basis for any astronomical calculation and, thus, at the heart of nautical navigation, casting of birth horoscopes, or the determination of the days of moveable feast in the liturgical calendar. Astronomers and astrologers alike derived their ephemerides, almanacs, calendars, practicas, and nativities from astronomical tables. From the conceptional framework and understanding of »Symbolic Material« particular research questions therefore arise: What was the epistemic status of images and paper tools in the process of calculation and symbolic operation? How did the material qualities of any such visual tools relate to the astral practice? Are ubiquity, stability, transmission and tangibility of visual and material tools factors for cosmological notions and their dissemination within the corpus of vernacular and natural philosophical knowledge?
Active Symbolic Brain Materials
Another question that stands at the center of the project concerns the nature of the production of symbolic activity. To give an example, certain parts of the human brain allow us to learn, process and invent a huge vocabulary of symbols connecting symbolic forms with abstract semantic knowledge about objects, actions and aspects thereof, whereas the materials of the brains of our closest relatives, monkeys and apes, do not even allow them to build small symbolic vocabularies. Here, we ask: what are the material differences between symbol-bearing and non-symbol-bearing brains, and, in particular, what are the distinctive features of neural materials that enable symbolicity? To answer these questions, simulations with brain-constrained networks will be performed to study the functional consequences of specific material properties of neuroanatomical structure and connectivity. This research will lead to neural simulators mimicking essential symbol processing functions of the healthy and neurologically impaired human brain, in collaboration with MoA projects Cutting and Weaving.
Materialism and its Vicissitudes
Returning to philosophy and to its dealing with materiality, the research departs from the contemporary materialist turn in humanities, which in its heterogeneity reacts to the ongoing innovations in natural and life sciences, most particularly to the research on brain plasticity, epigenetics and active matter. In these and other scientific frameworks the very conception of materiality is being renegotiated or reinvented, which allows philosophy not only to reflect on its epistemological present but also to reexamine and potentially rewrite the overall history of materialism. In its broader framework, the philosophical research in »Symbolic Material« will thus also return to the historical vicissitudes and metamorphoses of materialism, understood as an ontological, epistemological and, last but not least, political program.
