The project Symbolic Material develops a material epistemology as an integrative conceptual framework for »Matters of Activity«. From the perspective of philosophy, art and visual history, linguistics, history of mathematics, physics, biology, and neuroscience, we investigate the interplay of symbolic processes and their material foundations. Changing the view from allegedly passive material to »active matter« and paying attention to its inherent symbolic dimension provokes a fundamental shift in the traditional boundaries between nature and culture. It changes the notion of matter itself.
Material activity is rooted in two basic symbolic latencies of matter: its memory and potentiality, which are present as meaningful past and possible future states. We thus no longer regard matter as a passive carrier of properties such as solidity, opacity, or durability, but as a dynamic and symbolically informed agent. Against this background, Symbolic Material addresses contemporary issues and challenges within different cultural, societal, economic, and technological areas of concern.
Methodologically, our material epistemology approach joins the critical analysis of historical and cultural genealogies in the humanities with experimental research in the natural sciences and practice-oriented design strategies. We analyze exemplary materials and practices in model experiments and speculative prototypes elaborated by the other Cluster projects. By exploring fundamental categories to capture the inherent entanglement of the material and the symbolic – such as matter, activity, symbol, code, memory, potentiality, energeia, and gestalt – the project aims to rethink and reinvent the analog in digital times.
The fundamental concepts of the Cluster – matter, activity, symbol, code, among others – present themselves as tasks and promises at the same time. Used and conceived differently in the individual disciplines, they are experimentally explored and reflectively developed as common categories.
While philosophy offers methods of dealing with concept formation and analysis of terms that other disciplines cannot provide, conceptual work is not the work of philosophically trained specialists alone and certainly not just a theoretical matter. Conceptualizations arise from practices, but they also help to elucidate them. Understood not only as a means of presenting scientific results but as vital research tools, they are to be assessed based on the practical consequences of their use. This involves understanding their translatabilities or lack thereof, their equivalencies, ambiguities, or inherent contradictions as well as being aware of their connotations and metaphorical charges across different fields of study. The challenge lies in devising conceptual orientations that align with the Cluster’s interdisciplinary venture and consistently prove effective in guiding experimental practices and confronting their material underpinnings.
