Prof. Dr. Maria Luisa Catoni
Maria Luisa Catoni studied Classics, Archaeology and Art History at Pisa University and the Scuola Normale Superiore. She founded the PhD Program in Analysis and Management of Cultural Heritage and the LYNX Center for the Interdisciplinary Analysis of Images at IMT Lucca.
Her research centers on the functioning of images in Antiquity and the Classical Tradition as well as the functions and institutionalization of Cultural Heritage in contemporary societies. She has published on the interactions among different ›media‹ perceptions and contexts in Classical Antiquity, the ›technai‹, knowledge and perceptive functions involved in the production and uses of images, the relationship between visual ›media‹ and the scientific, social and political contexts of their uses, the reception of ancient ideas and images in post-antique Western arts and culture. She has also been working, in terms of both research and institution building, on the uses of Cultural Heritage. Her international appointments concern both research and its evaluation.
