Trazos
Pioneering Publication on Biomaterials Launched in Buenos Aires
In April 2024, »Trazos ed Biomaterials«, a pioneering publication in Spanish in the interdisciplinary field of biomaterials developments, edited by MoA member Heidi Jalkh and Gisela Pozzetti, and designed by Paula Rodríguez, was published and launched in Buenos Aires.
This book's objective is to promote the interaction between the Spanish-speaking community and provide access to topics predominantly discussed in English. It seeks to stimulate the dialogue and amplify the scope of the Latin American field of biomaterials to a broader audience. Likewise, it aspires to foster collaborations that transcend language barriers, promoting enriching exchanges of ideas and knowledge.
The book is divided into three sections which explore, interrogate, shape, and reflect on these scientific and creative advancements. In the first section, readers will find a collection of bespoke essays by 12 specialists whose visions range from biology to the humanities, exploring the intersections between design, science, and culture. On the other hand, the project section presents 24 innovative developments in biomaterials and biofabrication, offering a vision of diverse design processes that comprehend this constantly evolving field.
The result of the dialogue between projects and ideas is manifested in the perspectives section, proposing four approaches that project the synergy between science, design, and culture by reimagining new aesthetic languages. This interdisciplinary vision is reflected in the editorial design of »Trazos« which adopts a non-linear structure and uses cross-references to connect various themes and concepts. The book includes a glossary to facilitate the understanding of technical terms and key concepts, expanding access to people new to the field of biomaterials development.
»Trazos« is an independent and self-financed publication by Sistemas Materiales, an interdisciplinary research group that develops projects at the intersection of science, design, and crafts, seeking to explore new strategies and disruptive processes to develop non-conventional alternatives to materials and manufacturing methods from, with, and for nature. This collaboration between scientific disciplines and the design seeks a paradigm shift: doing/making from a more biological, organic, and regenerative approach.
With contributions by MoA members Bastian Beyer, Johanna Hehemeyer-Cürten, Wolfgang Schäffner, Daniel Suárez, and Charlett Wenig, and Rodrigo Martin Iglesias, Coordinator of the Master Open Design.
