BEYOND THE CURTAIN. Creating Transient Environments
Documentation of the Final Presentations and Exhibition
The Final Presentations of the MoA Design Research Studio »BEYOND THE CURTAIN. Creating Transient Environments« took place on February 13, 2024, from 11 am - 3.30 pm, followed by a light reception 4 pm - 6 pm in the foyer of the weißensee school of art and design berlin.
»BEYOND THE CURTAIN« (Department of Textile and Material Design, Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin) explored curtains as active spatial elements. Soft and responsive, they suggest an architecture of transition and change. The building of the Akademie der Künste Hanseatenweg (Architect Werner Düttmann, 1960) with its different material and spatial qualities served as a specific context for the designs. The interdisciplinary exchange with experts from research and practice accompanied the design process. For example, in experimental hands-on workshops, for example, active materials that interact with their environment were examined together with researchers from »Matters of Activity«: hydrogel, wax, water and salt hydrate. This resulted in a variety of concepts for textile elements that not only create space as textile elements, but also react flexibly to changes in their surroundings they become architectural tools for socially or climatically adaptive environments. The outcomes of this explorative journey from the winter semester 23/24 were presented in a series of prototypes in the exhibition.
The project was carried out as a MoA Design Research Studio in close cooperation with the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity« as part of the projects Material Form Function and Weaving. The exhibition ran from February 13 to February 23, 2024.
