MoA Design Studio: Scaling Nature (1): Wrinkles
at NuThinkers during Domotex Tradefair in Hanover
Curling lettuce leaves, shrinking skin or wrinkling biofilms serve as starting point for bio-inspired textile design concepts at the weissensee school of art and design berlin. Students of the bachelor's program in textile and surface design investigated material activity in natural structures and developed new design strategies for active surfaces in a spatial context. Paper screens open up with humidity, woolen fabrics become elastic without synthetic additives and three-dimensional textiles turn into tactile patterns.
A research-based design approach is at the core of the project, which was carried out in the context of the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity. Image Space Material« with the participation of scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Colloids and Interfaces Golm, Department of Biomaterials.
