Symposium conceptualized and Curated by the Research Team »Times of Waste« at FHNW Academy of Art and Design Basel, in Collaboration with MoA and Kunstgewerbemuseum
The symposium took place June 17th – 18th 2021 and provided a platform to discuss the engagement with (waste) material and bridged between theoretical studies and a response/able, careful way of handling materiality in sciences, arts, and collections. The event was conceptualized and curated by the research team Times of Waste at FHNW Academy of Art and Design Basel and realized in collaboration with the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity« and the Kunstgewerbemuseum der Staatlichen Museen Berlin.

New Online Lecture Series at weißensee school of art and design berlin
On Tuesday, May 11th the online lecture series »On Gestaltung« started which was initiated by Cluster members Jörg Petruschat and Patricia Ribault at weißensee school of art and design. This lecture series was conceived in two parts: »Theories«, which complements Jörg Petruschat’s seminar »Theories of Gestaltung«, and »Actions«, which was an extension of Ben Lignel’s seminar »Performing Research: Being with / Learning with / Speaking with an Object«. The following speaker on June 8th was Glenn Adamson, curator and writer, previous director of the Museum of Arts and Design (New York), head of research at the V&A (London), and Curator at the Chipstone Foundation in Milwaukee.

Cluster Professor Patricia Ribault Member of the Jury for the Prestigious French Prize that Rewards Expertise, Creativity, and Innovation in the Crafts
On October 5th, 2021, the winners of the new edition of the Prix Liliane Bettencourt pour l'intelligence de la main® (»the intelligence of the hand«)® 2021 were revealed and celebrated together with those of the year 2020 in a ceremony in Paris. MoA member Patricia Ribault was again part of the prestigious international jury chaired by Jean de Loisy, director of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris. The competition for professional craftspeople rewards expertise, creativity, and innovation in the crafts. Since its inception in 1999, the prize has become a label of excellence for French crafts, enhancing their reputation and recognizing the talent of nearly 90 individuals working in a number of different fields whose achievements demonstrate »the intelligence of the hand«.

Lecture Series at Weißensee School of Art and Design Continues
Our modes of giving form evolve and hybridize more and more, but they are also inhabited by common and timeless questionings that have to do with our demiurgic tendencies. This lecture series, initiated in 2021 by Patricia Ribault and Jörg Petruschat, questioned the processes of formation and transformation of the material world we live in through various concepts: constraint, function and dysfunction, formativity and performativity, visualization and representation, activity, bricology..., all of which constitute the inseparably mental and material set of operations that lead to the genesis of a thing.

Exhibition at Kunstgewerbemuseum
The exhibition »Design Lab #13: Material Legacies« at Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin explored contingencies and ruptures between traditional crafts and the most recent developments at the crossroads of material research, design, engineering, and architecture. It brought together artifacts from the museum’s collection with work-in-progress installations by designers and researchers from the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity. Image Space Material« in order to initiate a dialogue about the historical, contemporary, and future conditions under which materiality unfolds.
By engaging with a series of different materials and techniques the exhibition encompassed both the problematization of unsustainable pasts and presents as well as the imagination of speculative material futures. Taking materiality as a starting point, each of the exhibits investigated its sociocultural, economic, and political context in order to disentangle the multiple interrelations that arise from and with materials. more

After the release of the anthology edited by Patricia Ribault, including contributions by Cluster members Samuel Bianchini, Cecile Bidan, Horst Bredekamp, Mason Dean, Emile De Visscher, Peter Fratzl, Lorenzo Guiducci, Leonie Häsler, Claudia Mareis, Martin Müller, Jörg Petruschat, Emanuele Quinz, Khashayar Razghandi, Patricia Ribault, Wolfgang Schäffer and Charlett Wenig, we're happy to announce that the publication is now available open access.
Through the concepts of »Design, Gestaltung and Formatività«, this book sheds new light on the processes of formation and transformation of the material world we live in. In the first part— »Giving Form« —philosophers, historians, psychologists and cultural studies scholars question our modes of giving form, while in the second— »Form Given« — artists, designers, engineers and scientists unfold their creative processes. These »philosophies of making« invite us to reflect on what we do, what we can do, and how to do it, but they also spur us into action.

The two »Dissect« events held as part of Berlin Science Week 2022 on November 2nd and 4th were a great success and a unique experience. In the sold-out Tieranatomisches Theater at Humboldt-Universität Berlin, researchers from different disciplines discussed contemporary artworks in a fascinating way, involving the audience in the process of knowledge and experience: On the first evening about Marco Donnarumma's »Amygdala«, on the second evening about Tomas Saraceno's Spiders. Those who were unfortunately unable to attend can look forward to the video documentation, which will be published soon.

Rabe and John Nyakatura has been published in the Tagesspiegel Special on Neurology. »Cutting, separating and exposing are ancient human cultural techniques. The Cluster of Excellence project »Cutting« is investigating them on the basis of tumors in the brain and of fossils in rock. Anthology »Design, Gestaltung, Formatività« Focuses on Philosophies of Making
What do the gestures of a neurosurgeon, a painter, an engineer, a craftsman or a biologist have in common? Based on the concepts of ›design‹, ›gestaltung‹, and ›formatività‹, this book takes a new look at the processes of formation and transformation of the material world we live in. Researchers in history, philosophy, psychology, media, and cultural studies question the processes of giving form, while artists, designers, engineers, and scientists describe their creative processes based on their own work. We cordially invite you to take part in the presentation of the book »Design, Gestaltung, Formatività. Philosophies of Making« (Birkhäuser 2022) in the presence of the editor, MoA member Patricia Ribault, and several authors, such as Peter Fratzl, Lorenzo Guiducci, Barbara Schmidt, Jörg Petruschat, Judith Seng, Martin Müller and Khashayar Razgandhi (tbc). On March 23rd, 2023, .able Journal, an innovative image-based multiplatform journal for publishing research at the intersection of art, design, and sciences was launched. .able reinvents the publication form by making research accessible through images. Free of charge and distributed on numerous platforms, media, and devices, Created at the initiative of La Chaire Arts & Sciences of the École Polytechnique, the École des Arts Décoratifs – PSL, and the Fondation Daniel et Nina Carasso, the journal is published by Actar Publishers and supported by some thirty international academic partners. »Matters of Activity« is proud to tell you that the Cluster is connected to this great project by several members: Editor-in-chief of .able is Samuel Bianchini, Associated Member to MoA, part of the board are MoA Co-Director Claudia Mareis and Cluster Professor Patricia Ribault. Among the first researchers to use the new publication format to present their research is MoA member Emile de Visscher.

The first lecture was given by Karola Dierichs, Cluster professor for »Material and Code«, sharing her insights about »Designing Matter-Teaching Research and Research through Teaching.« Patricia Ribault, Thomas Ness, and Lucy Norris will give further lectures in the following weeks.

MoA Members Contribute to International Network Meeting with Bauhaus Dessau
Performative dimensions of design, sensory cognition, and body knowledge were essential modules of Bauhaus theory. In the context of this year’s thematic preoccupation of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation with the human body, the Bauhaus Study Rooms 2023 on June 15th and 16th focus on the topic of performativity as an integral component of design processes and design activities. Design is viewed as a reciprocal process and a corporeal activity. In different formats and learning environments, the event explores the extent to which performative methods contribute to new design approaches. The two-day mini-festival is conducted by the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation in cooperation with the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity« at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Hand-on Workshop at Bauhaus Study Rooms
The Architectural Yarns research group at »Matters of Activity« has been hosting a hands-on workshop on tactile knowledge in performative research at the Bauhaus Study Rooms 2023.
During the one-day workshop, a group of 45 international students from Bauhaus Foundation Dessau, Coop Design Research of the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences explored, verbalized and mapped tactile practices and textile gestures with large-scale yarns made of natural fibers. By investigating reconfigurable textile techniques with yarn samples, insights into collective design and construction processes of fiber-based materials such as ›Architectural Yarns‹ were gained.

Exploring Neuroplasticity through Art and Science
Like the sculptor with marble, neurosurgeons dialogue with the brain they operate on. Mapping and representing these ›brain roads‹ can be achieved through various imaging methods, which help neurosurgeons extend their knowledge of the cerebral anatomy. The French Professor in neuro-oncology Hugues Duffau is famous for operating on low-grade gliomas by performing awake surgery with very little technology. His methodology includes a complex mix of techniques, disciplines and experiments based on the concept of neuroplasticity and a limited use of medical imaging in the operating room. The workshop, organized by Patricia Ribault, will explore these »Brain Roads« during Berlin Science Week on November 2nd from 10.00 am– 5.00 pm.

Poster Symposium »Terra Morphosis II: Patterns«
Symposium on the Intersection of the Biological, the Geological and the Digital
This day-long event explored the intersection of the biological, the geological, and the digital. Through concepts of morphogenesis (the biological development of form) and pattern formation, the symposium invited a cross-disciplinary group of scholars to discuss overlapping histories and theories of computation, materiality, and information in both Western and non-Western contexts. The symposium considered forms of life, intelligence and communication that extend beyond fixed boundaries of the human, the organic, and the machinic. It explored questions of biological and computation neural networks, human and plant communication, geological and architectural structures, ecological and social systems, bringing together leading scholars in the Digital Humanities (N. Katherine Hayles, Wolfgang Ernst, Mark Hansen), the Natural Sciences (Peter Fratzl, Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent, Giuseppe Longo, Paco Calvo) and Art and Design Theory (Olga Goriunova, Patricia Ribault).

Sylvie Retailleau Visited Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
During her visit to Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin on May 28th, the French Minister for Higher Education and Research, Sylvie Retailleau also visited the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity«. After a presentation of the Cluster Directors about the current research of »Matters of Activity«, several MoA researchers gave insights into their work in the MoA Design Studio and the Activarium, the Cluster's showroom. The framework for Retailleau's visit was provided by the state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Germany from May 26th to 28th.

Field Workshop and Symposium Organised by Olaf Avenati & Patricia Ribault
The interdisciplinary symposium at La Villa Douce in Reims aims to gain a better understanding of the role of images and to analyze their modalities and limits after observing their use in situ, in order to better understand neuroplasticity, propose new graphic forms, and open up an interdisciplinary conversation on their future. The event is part of the Brain Roads project and in addition to the two organizers Patricia Ribault and Olaf Avenati, Lucius Fekonja and Thomas Picht are among the Cluster members involved.

Material Form Function
From a historical perspective, modern culture and technology have been extensively built on passivated materials, like concrete, steel, plywood or glass, resulting in anthropogenic ecological crises. The core objective of »Material Form Function« is to overcome this logic, which considers matter as an exploitable, passive and ahistorical substance.
