Second Breakfast
Hosted by Symbolic Material, the Second Breakfast is an open reading and discussion forum for all Cluster members and guests, wherein we work on the Cluster’s conceptual framework. Important terms related to our questions of activity are (re-)evaluated in a participatory and interdisciplinary setting. The fundamental approach is one of a critical, non-dualistic historicization and actualization of central concepts and notions such as energeia/energy, metabolism, morphology, evolution, beauty, and gestalt. Shared reading and discussion of primary and secondary literature enhanced by selected lectures by members and guests aim at gaining a new understanding of the historic uses and potential actuality of the above-mentioned central concepts. Accordingly, the topics discussed range from Socratic philosophy to artificial intelligence, with cornerstones like Aristoteles, Leibniz, Darwin, Goethe and Max Planck.
Minutes taken by student assistants help documenting the sessions and the threads of the discussions, and are made public to all cluster members.
The Second Breakfast takes place in a roughly bi-weekly interval, from 10:15-11:45 a.m., in room 2.04/05. It is led by Horst Bredekamp, Jürgen Rabe, and Regine Hennge and organized by Kolja Thurner and Sabine Marienberg.
