Dr. Léa Perraudin
Léa Perraudin is an environmental media scholar. At »Matters of Activity«, she works as postdoctoral research associate in the project Material Form Function and is assistant to co-director Claudia Mareis. During the winter term 2025/26 and summer term 2026 Léa substitutes the professorship of Design and History of Knowledge at the Department of Cultural History and Theory at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Léa’s research in the realm of environmental humanities and queer feminist science and technology studies explores the intricate ties of infrastructures, bodies and materials at geo-eco-political thresholds. A particular concern of her work are nuanced forms of collaboration and care between critical research, design, and everyday material practices, which she attends to via speculative methodologies and diffractive ways of writing. After formal training in cultural anthropology, philosophy and media culture analysis, she obtained her PhD in media studies at the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities, University of Cologne. Previously, Léa has held positions at the University of Cologne and the Münster School of Design and received fellowships from the University of California, Berkeley and the Internationales Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie (IKKM) at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
Positioned at the intersection of media-ecological, neo-materialist and techno-feminist theory work, her monograph Elementare Ekstasen. Sondierungen der Technosphäre (2024, meson press) attends to the messy states of matter emergent in the technosphere and analyzes the extensive tendencies towards ecologization since the mid 20th century through their experimental processing in media art and interface design.
Léa is currently working on her second book titled Melting into the World. Towards a Media Theory of Phase Transitions, which ties together site-specific inquiries on materials at thresholds in the current ecological predicament, such as water, wax, fat and salt. It approaches the physical process of phase transition from an environmental media studies perspective and investigates material entanglements within contemporary technocapitalist infrastructures through situated phenomena of transience, dispersal, abundance and solidification. Additionally, she is finalizing the duograph Speculating With (2026, De Gruyter) together with Martin Müller. Responding to a pressing methodological desideratum, the book offers a proposal for collaborative speculation in inter- and transdisciplinary contexts by unpacking the legacies and material futures of speculative practices at the intersection of critical design and critical humanities.
From 2022 to 2025, Léa led the experimental laboratory CollActive Materials, a joint project of the Clusters of Excellence »Matters of Activity« and »Science of Intelligence«, funded by the Berlin University Alliance, together with Martin Müller. »CollActive Materials« established a novel approach to knowledge exchange by means of speculative design. Through the project, several exhibitions and workshop formats were conceived to activate multiple publics in collectively materializing possible futures amid the lived reality of environmental and social transformations. By foregrounding modes of collaboration across scientific research and everyday material practices, »CollActive Materials« considers how co-speculation can unsettle dominant future narratives and open space for different ways of knowing and making.
As a member of the DFG-Network Flows. Schmiermittel der Theoriebildung, Léa collaboratively engages flows as »lubcricants« for theory work by critically examining the cultural logics of a world in flux and confronting them with the semantics of leakage, viscosity, turbulence and stagnation.
